Straight bass, homie: Randy Moss’ team wins fishing tournament
Making predictions is a risky business, but Randy Moss doesn’t shy away from much.
The soon-to-be Hall of Famer and one of the greatest Minnesota Vikings in franchise history was back in the Land of 10,000 lakes last weekend for current Vikings defensive end Brian Robison’s charity event.
‘I bet you we are going to win’
Robison’s charity is called the “Reel ‘Em In Foundation”; as you’d expect, his big annual event includes a fishing tournament. This year they fished in the small town of Wabasha, Minnesota (immortalized in the “Grumpy Old Men” movies), and there was an auction the night before the tournament.
Wabasha resident David Meyer paid $7,000 for the chance to be on Moss’ fishing team during the auction, and after Moss said, “We’re going to enjoy ourselves, and I bet we’re going to win this.”
He wasn’t wrong: at the end of the day on Saturday, the team of Moss, Meyer and pro fisherman Ott DeFoe were declared the winners.
But Robison wasn’t about to let Moss get all the glory for making his prediction come true.
“He backed it up, but he had a pretty good boat captain in Ott DeFoe,” Robison told the Vikings’ website. “He walked it, he talked it and came away with some hardware.”
Moss and Robison weren’t teammates in Minnesota – Robison was drafted in 2007, and by then Moss was in New England – but appreciated Moss, an avid outdoorsman, giving his time.
“He doesn’t have to say yes to this. For him to come out shows the type of character he has. I couldn’t be more appreciative of the guys that came out here,” Robison said “They are household names, and they know when they come here they are going to get bombarded by fans, but they embrace it and that’s what I love about it.”
Robison’s current teammates Linval Joseph and Everson Griffen were also part of the tournament.
Money raised helps police departments
Robison’s foundation has partnered with K9s4Cops, which helps departments get K9 partners to help their work in communities.
Thanks to past Reel ‘Em In Foundation tournaments, the sheriff’s department of Goodhue County, which neighbors Wabasha County, has three K9s. Last weekend, over $30,000 was raised for more dogs to be donated.
Robison’s father, Terry, spent 29 years in the Houston Police Department.

Mays Business School Supports K9s4COPs
As the semester comes to an end, the Strategic Philanthropy class at Mays Business School has been been busy deciding on how to distribute $62,500 in grant funding.
The students in the class evaluated 43 nonprofit applications from Bryan and College Station. K9s4COPs is so excited to announce we are one of the five nonprofits to receive funding. We are so grateful for the support from The Philanthropy Lab and a newfound partnership with the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation’s Community Grant Program, Texas A&M University, and Mays Business School. The $12,500 grant we received will go to purchase a K9 officer!
